The Colour of Connection: How Colour Shapes Your Brand Story

Love is in the air this month but let’s talk about another kind of love: the love between your audience and your brand.

And yes, colour plays a huge role in that connection.

As a Highly Sensitive Person (and full-time creative sponge), I don’t just see colours, I feel them.

That sunny yellow? It’s optimism and energy.

Deep navy? Trust and calm.

Electric pink? Bold joy with a wink of mischief.

And the best part? Your audience feels it too, even if they don’t realise it.

Why colour really matters for connection

Colours are emotional shortcuts.

They bypass the “thinky” part of our brain and go straight to the part that says: Yes, I like this. I feel safe here. I belong.

Here’s a quick colour snapshot:

  • Reds & Oranges – Passion, action, warmth

  • Yellows – Optimism, creativity, sunshine energy

  • Greens – Growth, harmony, balance

  • Blues – Trust, calm, professionalism

  • Pinks & Purples – Playfulness, luxury, imagination

  • Black & White – Clarity, sophistication, contrast

The HSP Twist: How I Use Colour in Content

When I work with a client, I’m not just picking colours because they’re “on trend” - there is much more to it than that.

I’m actually tuning into the feeling you want your audience to have.
Do you want them to feel inspired? Comforted? Fired up and ready to go?

Colour can make all of that happen before a single word is read.

For example:

  • community arts project might lean into rich, warm tones that make people feel welcome and safe.

  • high-energy event might go full neon to create instant excitement.

  • calm wellbeing brand might choose soft pastels and muted tones to slow the heartbeat.

Your Brand’s Colour Love Story

So here’s my challenge for you this month: take a look at your brand colours and ask yourself Do they tell the story you want people to feel?

If the answer is “not quite,” then it might be time for a little creative refresh. And yes, that’s where I can help.
